2015 brings us the fourth and final installment in The Hunger Games franchise, which pretty much surprised everyone by turning out to be a smart, thematically rich sci-fi series rather than a few cash-grab, overly faithful YA adaptations. The first image of Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss from the final film, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, arrived a couple of days ago, and in the interim Lionsgate has released first looks as Josh Hutcherson’s Peeta and Liam Hemsworth’s Gale from the pic as well.
These aren’t the most revealing pictures, but the Gale image does offer a preview of the sewer sequence from the movie, which director Francis Lawrence told us recently was one of the toughest to shoot, but will hopefully have been well worth the effort. Those who have read Suzanne Collins’ book trilogy know that Mockingjay is the weakest of the three, but Lawrence thus far has managed to make compelling and thoughtful films that feel distinct, so I’m eager to see what kind of picture Mockingjay – Part 2 is after the propaganda-leaning Mockingjay – Part 1.
Anyway, take a look at the new Mockingjay pictures below via Hemsworth’s Facebook and Hutcherson’s Twitter. I expect a trailer will be along any day now. The film opens in theaters on November 20th and also stars Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Julianne Moore, Sam Claflin, Jena Malone, Gwendoline Christie, Stanley Tucci, and Donald Sutherland.
