Limited Paper: Mondo Announces Second ADVENTURE TIME Gallery Show from Artists JJ Harrison, Rich Kelly, Craig Drake; BLACK BEETLE Online Drop

     June 10, 2013

Mondo’s made no secret of the fact that they’re really, really, really into Pendleton Ward and Cartoon Network’s blockbuster animated series, Adventure Time.  Last year, they held a special marathon screening for the series at the Alamo Drafthouse (complete with an Adventure Time-themed menu, which gave birth do the Rainicorn-colored hot dogs that still making regular appearances in Limited Paper’s most terrifying nightmares), released a print to commemorate the event, and opened an Adventure Time-themed gallery show.

Sporadic Adventure Time-themed releases were dropped in the months that followed, often enough that rumors circulated that a second AT-themed show was headed to the Mondo Gallery.  And—as some of you may have already heard—the rumor’s now been confirmed:  a second Adventure Time-themed showcase will open towards the end of this month…and this time Ward’s series is bringing J.G. Quintel’s Regular Show along for the ride.  More on this (as well as an update re: Francesco Francavilla’s Black Beetle print) after the jump, folks.

A bit of unsolicited commentary:  over the weekend, I had to make a trip downtown to pick up some prints from a fellow collector.  We decided to use the Mondo Gallery as our meet-up spot, and after arriving the small talk quickly turned to the Adventure Time/Regular Show exhibit that Mondo announced towards the end of last week.  I’d heard through the grapevine that a bit of grumbling was taking place online in the wake of that announcement (the bulk of which revolved around what might be called “Adventure Time Fatigue”), and I asked my associate what he thought about the situation.

“Well, my kids are huge fans of the show, so they’re gonna be really excited.  And it’s really cool to be able to take ‘em to the Gallery for a show,” he told me, pointing out that most of Mondo’s gallery events—for one reason or another—aren’t usually considered all-ages affairs.  Immediately I recalled how many kids had shown up for the first Adventure Time show, how pumped they were to meet Pen Ward and Tom Kenny (who plays the Ice King on the show), the sugar-high they all seemed to be flying on thanks to the free goodies Mondo was handing out inside.  It was a nice reminder that gallery shows belong to everyone, and that Mondo’s willing to throw the occasional event that collectors can bring their kids to.  I know I would’ve gone apeshit if a local art gallery had thrown a Ninja Turtles-themed show when I was a kid.

And, hey, if you’re not a fan of the series, look at it this way:  you’ll have that much more money saved to deal with the onslaught of awesome drops that’re headed to Comic-Con 2013 (and believe you me, Princess, you’re gonna want every last bit of scratch you can wrangle together for this year’s SDCC; consider that a warning).  But enough of that noise, let’s move on!  Here’s the flier for the Adventure Time/Regular Show showcase, opening June 21st at the Mondo Gallery in downtown Austin:

Pretty solid lineup, no?  And unless I was totally imagining this, I’m fairly certain Mike Mitchell—the last artist to have a smash solo show at the Mondo Gallery—recently confirmed that he’s going to be involved, as well.  Here’s a look at a few pieces from the showcase, an original by Tiny Kitten Teeth and a giclee from JJ Harrison:

  • Jake Is A Tent by Tiny Kitten Teeth
  • Original

  • Mordecai and Margaret by JJ Harrison
  • Giclee

Also on the horizon:  Francesco Francavilla’s Black Beetle print, which we showed you just last week.  That print was made available at Heroes Con over the weekend, and now Mondo’s putting the remaining copies online for everyone who wasn’t able to make it to North Carolina this weekend.  Here’s the news:

(Quote) Tomorrow we will be releasing Francesco Francavilla’s beautiful poster for THE BLACK BEETLE. If you are unfamiliar with the character, we recommend picking up the back issues and reading immediately. THE BLACK BEETLE is a crime-fighting, pulp/noir hero created, written and illustrated by Francesco Francavilla for Dark Horse Comics.

The regular version of the poster, originally offered at Francesco’s booth at HeroesCon over the weekend, is an 11-color screen print while the variant is 12 colors. Both are completely gorgeous. (End Quote)

Mondo ain’t lying:  it is a gorgeous piece.  If you missed it last week, here’s what you’ll be vying for tomorrow:

  • The Black Beetle by Francesco Francavilla
  • 24×36”
  • $75 variant edition of 110

  • The Black Beetle by Francesco Francavilla
  • 24×36”
  • $55 regular edition of 225
