Netflix to Premiere Chris Tucker’s First Stand-Up Comedy Special

     March 23, 2015

Along with their outstanding, ambitious original long-form series (House of Cards, Bloodline) and mini-series, Netflix has also come to be known as the new home for stand-up specials. Earlier this month, they released Aziz Ansari’s Live at Madison Square Garden, which featured the Parks & Recreation comedian riffing on social media, his parents, and his celebrity lifestyle; they also released Nick Offerman’s American Ham special. And according to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix is now set to premiere Chris Tucker’s first-ever stand-up special, simply titled Chris Tucker Live. The stand-up special will take place at the Historic Fox Theater in Atlanta, GA, Tucker’s hometown.

Tucker is producing the special through his own company, Chris Tucker Entertainment, and Phil Joanou will direct. Though the comedic actor’s salad days were in the 1990s, he unexpectedly came back into the spotlight with his excellent supporting performance in David O. Russell’s pedestrian Silver Linings Playbook. In general, however, Tucker is remembered for his lead role in the Rush Hour franchise, which had him teaming up with Jackie Chan to take down a variety of crime lords; the fourth installment of the Rush Hour series is on the way, as is a television series based on the films. The films are, well, not good, but Tucker stole scenes in both Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown and Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element, as well as the severely underrated Dead Presidents and Panther. That being said, his films clearly weren’t all winners: the less said about Money Talks, the crime-comedy he co-starred in with Charlie “Winning” Sheen, the better.

Chris Tucker Live is set to premiere July 10th on Netflix.
