Netflix in Advanced Negotiations with The Obamas for High-Profile, Inspirational Content

     March 9, 2018

Obama’s back! Well, maybe. A new report has Netflix being in advanced negotiations with the former President and First Lady, and if that comes to fruition, we can expect new high-profile, inspirational content shaped by Barack Obama and Michelle Obama. So whether you miss the Obamas in an existential crisis sort of way, or miss having them around to blame for all your troubles, either way, having their name attached to Netflix content is a sure-fire ratings bonanza.

The NY Times says the proposed and not-yet-final deal would have the streaming content giant paying the Obamas for exclusive content to be shared out to their 118 million (and growing) worldwide customer base. Episode count and format have not been revealed as of yet, but you can expect some more details if and when a deal closes. Some ideas floated include Barack Obama moderating conversations about divisive topics in American life, culture, and politics, and Michelle Obama returning to her goals of educating the public on the benefits of nutrition and exercise. The Obamas could also lend their endorsements to a variety of documentaries.

If you’re expecting the Obamas to use this platform as a way of directly responding to President Donald Trump and his ilk, don’t hold your breath. Netflix would, however, act as a way to get the Obamas’ particular brand of messaging out in an unfiltered way, extending their reach past their already impressive social media following.

Here’s what senior Obama adviser Eric Schultz said about the deal:

“President and Mrs. Obama have always believed in the power of storytelling to inspire. Throughout their lives, they have lifted up stories of people whose efforts to make a difference are quietly changing the world for the better. As they consider their future personal plans, they continue to explore new ways to help others tell and share their stories.”

For much, much more on what the Obamas have been up to, privately and publicly, since leaving the Oval Office, head on over to the NY Times write-up. As for their Netflix deal, we’ll have more on it as news develops. In the meantime, feel free to share your thoughts in the comments!
