New Image from UP

While a lot of folks are up in arms about “The Dark Knight” snub, I’m just pissed at the whole Academy system in general. The categories of “Best Animated Feature” and “Best Documentary Film” have become like tiny prisons where you can shove great films like “Wall-E” and “Man on Wire” out of the way. I don’t think Academy voters consciously dislike either of those films or don’t think they’re worthy of Best Picture. I think they want to spread as much love around as possible so they cut out redundancies and make sure that great films like these go home with a little statue, even if it’s not for the big award. I think that’s bullshit and it means that for as long as the “Best Animated Feature” category exists, no Pixar movie, despite all the critical acclaim and adoration, will ever be nominated for Best Picture, let alone win the award.

With that rant aside, we have a new image from “Up” today. Showing only 45 minutes of the film at BNAT a couple months ago, folks came out of that festival saying that those 45 minutes were the best thing they saw. So, yeah—I have some high hopes for this film. Of course, if there’s any studio that can clear a high bar, it’s Pixar.

For those just tuning in, here’s a brief synopsis: By tying thousands of balloon to his home, 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen sets out to fulfill his lifelong dream to see the wilds of South America. Right after lifting off, however, he learns he isn’t alone on his journey, since Russell, a wilderness explorer 70 years his junior, has inadvertently become a stowaway on the trip.

Check out the new image below. “Up” floats into theatres on May 29th.
