New ‘Teen Spirit’ Trailer Has Elle Fanning Singing in a Cinderella Story

     February 11, 2019

Bleecker Street has released a new Teen Spirit trailer. The upcoming film stars Elle Fanning as Violet, a shy teenager with a great singing voice who dreams of escaping her small town by competing in a singing competition that could propel her to pop superstardom.

This looks like a nice movie even if it is a bit simple. We’re seeing a tide of movies that dive into the nature pop superstardom (A Star Is Born, Vox Lux), and I’m curious to see what Teen Spirit adds to the conversation. Is it about the difficulties of the music business, or is it more of a wish-fulfillment story where the artist, through the power of her art, receives acclaim and glory?

Here’s what Jeff Sneider said in his review from TIFF 2018:

What’s nice about Teen Spirit is that Minghella isn’t aiming to indict the music industry or singing competitions here, instead wisely choosing to play it very earnest. This isn’t necessarily supposed to be a biting satire of our culture’s obsession with fame. We’ve seen enough cynicism about showbiz, and that’s why I liked the bubblegum feel of Teen Spirit.

Check out the Teen Spirit trailer below. The film opens April 5th and also stars Rebecca Hall, Zlatko Buric, and Agnieszka Grochowska.

Here’s the official synopsis for Teen Spirit:

Violet (Elle Fanning) is a shy teenager who dreams of escaping her small town and pursuing her passion to sing. With the help of an unlikely mentor, she enters a local singing competition that will test her integrity, talent and ambition. Driven by a pop-fueled soundtrack, Teen Spirit is a visceral and stylish spin on the Cinderella story. The film also stars Rebecca Hall, Zlatko Buric, and Agnieszka Grochowska.
