Casting Call: Olivia Munn Signs on for MAGIC MIKE; Harry Lloyd Joins CLOSER TO THE MOON

     August 31, 2011

We have a couple of short casting stories to report.  First up, Deadline reports that Olivia Munn has joined the cast of Steven Sodebergh’s Magic Mike.  Channing Tatum stars in the semi-autobiographical film about his days as a runaway stripper.  Aside from continuing the bizarre trend that Tatum should lead any movie let alone be its inspiration, I remain lukewarm on the cast.  The flick co-stars Alex Pettyfer, Matthew McConaughey, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Riley Keough, Gabriel Iglesias, and Cody Horn.  When the best guy in your ensemble is McConaughey, there’s a problem.  As for Munn, I feel about her the same way I feel about most of this cast: indifferent.

Deadline also reports that Harry Lloyd has joined Vera Farmiga and Mark Strong in the drama Closer to the Moon.  The drama centers on a Jewish bank robber in communist Romania who is forced to reenact his crime for the purpose of propaganda before he is executed.  Lloyd will play a cameraman who shoots the re-enactment.  American audiences probably best know Lloyd from his work playing entitled twerp Viserys Targaryen on Game of Thrones.  The role was fairly one-note but Lloyd took advantage of a single scene that added some dimension to his character.  Lloyd also had a small supporting role in Cary Fukunaga’s Jane Eyre (a film that deserves more Oscar buzz than it’s getting), and will next be seen playing a young Denis Thatcher in the Margaret Thatcher biopic The Iron Lady starring Meryl Streep.
