First Clip from PACIFIC RIM Features Idris Elba and Charlie Hunnam Squaring Off; Plus Tonto Gets Arrested in New Clip from THE LONE RANGER

     June 27, 2013

A couple of clips from two summer tentpoles have landed online.  In the first clip from Guillermo del Toro’s highly anticipated “robots vs. monsters” movie Pacific Rim, we see Charlie Hunnam’s washed-up pilot Raleigh Becket taking part in a rather heated conversation with commanding officer Stacker Pentecost, played by Idris Elba.  While all of the trailers have teased some fantastic battle sequences, this debut clip does a nice job of showing that del Toro’s massive film has interesting characters as well.  Also, Stringer Bell, y’all.  The film opens in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D on July 12th.

Additionally, Disney has released a new clip from director Gore Verbinski’s The Lone Ranger.  The clip highlights Johnny Depp’s predictably goofy performance as Tonto, as we see Armie Hammer’s titular lawman trying to arrest Tonto to no avail.  The pic opens on July 3rd.

Here’s the official synopsis for Pacific Rim:

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end.  To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge.  But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju.  On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past.  Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
