Mark Wahlberg Eyeing Lead Role in Boston Marathon Bombing Film PATRIOT’S DAY

     April 1, 2015

Back in November, we reported that Safe House director Daniel Espinosa was helming Boston Strong, which was based on the manhunt following the 2013 Boston Marathon Bombing. However, it looks like Boston Strong isn’t the only film trying to capture the subject matter.

Deadline reports that CBS Films is fast tracking Patriot’s Day, which is also about the manhunt for the terrorists. The almost-completed script, written by Matt Charman (Bridge of Spies), is based on the firsthand account of Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis. Mark Wahlberg, who is producing alongside Scott Stuber, Dylan Clark, Stephen Levinson, and Michael Radutzky, is looking to play Davis.

While Boston Strong is already planning to start filming this month so they can get footage of this year’s Boston Marathon, Patriot’s Day has the unique advantage of being partnered with 60 Minutes, and utilizing their coverage and reporting that ran in the aftermath of the bombing:

Deadline reports that Patriot’s Day is envisioned as a thriller, but I assume Boston Strong is in the same vein if they’re both about the manhunt to catch Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. While it’s odd to have competing films where the subject matter is heavy (as opposed to Snow White, asteroids, or volcanoes), I’m interested to see how the films differ assuming they both make it to the big screen.

As for Wahlberg in the lead role, the actor is attached to plenty of projects, but Deadline reports that he hasn’t officially set his next movie, so it’s possible Patriot’s Day could be next if they land an A-list filmmaker.
