CBS Films has released a new trailer for Patriots Day, director Peter Berg’s (Deepwater Horizon) dramatic chronicle of the Boston marathon bombing and its aftermath. Mark Wahlberg stars as Police Sergeant Tommy Saunders who joins survivors, first responders, and investigators in the hunt for the terrorists responsible for the act before they strike again.
Berg has certainly doubled down on making true-life “American hero” events his specialty, as he tackled the military in Lone Survivor, and just a few months ago released the oil rig disaster drama Deepwater Horizon (also with Wahlberg). It almost feels like a natural trajectory given that Berg perfected the “handheld camera adds reality” technique with Friday Night Lights and the subsequent TV series, and in Patriots Day Berg appears to be chronicling nationalism on a broader scale. The addition of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross as the film’s composers certainly set it apart from many other true-life dramas, and while this trailer is very heavy on the nationalism, I’m interested to see what insights Berg gleans from the full film itself.
