PAWN SACRIFICE Trailer: Tobey Maguire Is Chess Prodigy Bobby Fischer

     May 27, 2015

We got that brand new poster for writer Steven Knight and director Ed Zwick‘s docudrama Pawn Sacrifice yesterday and now the film’s first trailer has arrived. Tobey Maguire leads as chess prodigy Bobby Fischer who takes part in “The Match of the Century,” the 1972 World Chess Championship match between Fisher and the USSR champ, Boris Spassky (Liev Schreiber). Even though I don’t find the game of chess particularly riveting, this new trailer is surprisingly tense and does a stellar job giving the viewer access to Fischer as he caves under the pressure and his state of mind deteriorates.

Check out the new Pawn Sacrifice trailer for yourself below. The film hits select theaters on September 18th and also stars Peter Sarsgaard, Lily Rabe, Robin Weigert and Michael Stuhlbarg. Click here to check out Matt’s review of the film from TIFF.

Here’s the official synopsis for Pawn Sacrifice:

In a gripping true story set during the height of the Cold War, American chess prodigy Bobby Fischer (Tobey Maguire) finds himself caught between two superpowers when he challenges the Soviet Empire. Also starring Liev Schreiber and Peter Sarsgaard, PAWN SACRIFICE chronicles Fischer’s terrifying struggles with genius and madness, and the rise and fall of a kid from Brooklyn who captured the imagination of the world.
