New PEE-WEE HERMAN Movie Headed to Netflix With Judd Apatow Producing; Plot Details Under Wraps

     December 22, 2014

A few months back we reported that a new Pee-Wee Herman movie was “imminent.” I also wondered aloud if producer Judd Apatow was still involved (I was very much hoping he was, to be sure) and now it appears as if both facets of this are true.  While rumors have persisted for some time that this movie would indeed be happening, this appears to be our wake-up call that it is actually legit and will be hitting screens at some point in our lifetime.  And, like many of our favorite resurrected pieces of IP, it will be on Netflix.

That’s right, the new Pee-Wee Herman movie will be produced for, and stream on, Netflix.  I actually think this is a pretty good idea considering there’s no way to really assure a giant theatrical turnout for the beloved character, despite a core base that loves performer Paul Reubens.  And this way they get (in all likelihood) a greater degree of creative control with the burden of a giant release lifted from their shoulders.  Hit the jump for more on Pee-Wee Herman coming to Netflix.

pee-wees-big-adventurePer The Wrap the project is no longer at Universal and will now go ahead under the Netflix banner.  No director has been announced at this time and plot details are still under wraps,  but it has been confirmed that Reubens wrote the film alongside Paul Rust.  Apparently the director is in place though, they’re just not announcing him or her quite yet.  And they’d probably have to be onboard at this point, especially if there’s any veracity to the notion (put forth by Reubens himself) that the project could start shooting as early as this coming February.

Like I’ve said before, as long as it’s more Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure than Big Top Pee-Wee, I’m more or less onboard.
