‘Pee-wee’s Big Holiday’ Trailer Teases A Comic Adventure Spurred by Joe Manganiello

     February 16, 2016

We recently got our first taste of what to expect from Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, the first film based around Paul Reubens‘ iconic Pee-wee Herman character since Big Top Pee-wee in 1988. Now, with the latest trailer, we have a full sense of what the storyline of the new adventure will be and, perhaps just as importantly, what Joe Manganiello‘s place in Herman’s world will be. As it turns out, the Magic Mike standout is the man who spurs Pee-wee to venture outside of his safe, suburban home of Fairville, where he runs a local diner. The odds of this turning into A History of Violence are slim, but Manganiello definitely brings out a more adventurous and ambitious side of our cheery hero, as he sets out for the Big Apple and other spots in America’s vast landscape. You can check out the new trialer for the Netflix movie right below:

The film is the product of Reubens working with producer Judd Apatow and co-writer Paul Rust, both of whom have an existing relationship with Netflix from their upcoming comedy series, Love. The structure of the story, as compared to Big Top Pee-wee and Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, is not particularly original, but this isn’t exactly the franchise where I’m looking for the property to be revamped, only given some galvanic sense of imagination and invention. Reubens has had some, er, setbacks over the years but his ability in this particular role is simply unimpeachable – it’s one of the most unique character creations to be summoned in comedy over the last three or four decades. As long as Pee-wee’s Big Holiday invokes the same playfulness that the character’s show and previous films were able to realize, this will be a pleasant gem from the Netflix brand.

Here’s the official synopsis for Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, which will be released on Netflix on March 18th:

“In ‘Pee-wee’s Big Holiday,’ a fateful meeting with a mysterious stranger inspires Pee-wee Herman to take his first-ever holiday in this epic story of friendship and destiny.”
