R.I.P. Peter O’Toole (1932 – 2013)

     December 15, 2013

Legendary actor Peter O’Toole has died at the age of 81.  I don’t use the word “legendary” lightly.  O’Toole is one of the great actors of stage and screen, and his career is marked by spectacular performances.  The most noteworthy is his turn as T.E. Lawrence in one of the greatest films ever made, Lawrence of Arabia.  I re-watched the film earlier this year, and was awestruck at the subtle transformation of his character over the course of the film.  As O’Toole became older, he always managed to adjust and find new approaches.  For example, his performance as a manipulative director in The Stunt Man is devilishly good and delightful.  Many obituaries will remark on O’Toole’s eight Best Actor Oscar nominations without winning, but that only speaks to the decisions Academy voters.  O’Toole’s legacy as an actor is indisputable.  According to his agent, O’Toole died after suffering a long illness. He retired from acting last year.

Our deepest condolences go out to Mr. O’Toole’s family and friends.  After the jump, I’ve embedded one of his many highlight moments from Lawrence of Arabia.  I’ve also included the video of O’Toole receiving an honorary Academy Award because it includes a good montage of his work.
