First ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’ Images Reveal Javier Bardem’s Ghost Pirate

     October 3, 2016

The very first trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales debuted last night during Fear the Walking Dead of all places, and now Disney has unveiled some first-look images from the film. Pirates 5 was in development for quite some time before it actually got off the ground, coming off the financially successful but wholly underwhelming On Stranger Tides. After an extensive director search, Disney landed on Norwegian filmmakers Joachin Rønning and Espen Sandberg to take the helm, best known for directing the Best Foreign Language Oscar-nominated Kon-Tiki. But filming on Dead Men Tell No Tales wrapped way back in July 2015. Since then, not a single official image had been unveiled, with Disney keeping a very tight lid on this blockbuster sequel.

That’s a bit non-traditional for a property as huge as Pirates, and in keeping with that spirit, this first teaser trailer was a bit unexpected as it features zero footage of franchise star Johnny Depp. Of course, Depp is in some controversial hot water of his own, so perhaps Disney wanted to keep fans focused on the franchise as a whole for now and not his image. Nevertheless, this brief first look at Dead Men Tell No Tales is, at least from an effects perspective, promising.

Javier Bardem’s villainous Captain Salazar takes center stage both in the trailer and these images. The character is a ghost pirate who found himself trapped in the Devil’s Triangle, only to escape and seek revenge on his former nemesis Jack Sparrow. The notion of ghost pirates harkens back to the film that started it all, Curse of the Black Pearl, but Bardem is sporting some fantastically grotesque makeup and I’m fascinated by the effects work done to make his hair look as though it’s floating under water.

We probably won’t get a full trailer for Dead Men Tell No Tales until later this year (attached to Rogue One, perhaps?), but for now this brief teaser is somewhat encouraging. Take a closer look at the images below. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales also stars Brenton Thwaites, Kaya Scodelario, Geoffrey Rush, and Orlando Bloom. The film opens in theaters on May 26, 2017.
