PITCH PERFECT 3 in the Works; Rebel Wilson to Return

     April 11, 2015

The song-filled sequel Pitch Perfect 2 is poised to help kick off the summer movie season when it opens next month, but Universal Pictures is already working on Pitch Perfect 3. It’s not a huge shocker, since Pitch Perfect was somewhat of a surprise hit, going on to gross $113 million worldwide and spawn a hugely successful soundtrack. With the follow-up on the horizon, LA Times reporter Amy Kaufman broke word of Pitch Perfect 3:

When casting begun for Pitch Perfect 2 and Hailee Steinfeld joined the ensemble, it was reported that the plan was for her to take over the franchise in the future, so it’s likely she’ll be back as well (she no doubt signed a contract with multi-picture options). Obviously Universal will wait to see how Pitch Perfect 2 does before giving the greenlight to PP 3, but it seems likely the follow-up will be a success.

I’m looking forward to Pitch Perfect 2 for a number of reasons. Pitch Perfect was the most fun I had in a movie theater in all of 2012 so I’m enthused to jump back into this joyous, odd, and slightly irreverent world. But another reason I’m looking forward to Pitch Perfect 2 is that it’s directed by a woman, Elizabeth Banks. Little known fact: women aren’t given the chance to helm big franchise/blockbuster films very often (ie. almost never). That Banks is behind the camera on Pitch Perfect 2—and is making her feature directorial debut on the pic—is a huge deal, so if the film is a success, hopefully more studios will be willing to “take a chance” on letting a female take the helm of a blockbuster.

Pitch Perfect 2 opens in theaters on May 15th.
