Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is a film I like the more I think about it, and it bums me out that the movie couldn’t find an audience this summer. That being said, I think it could find a healthy life on home video, especially when the Blu-ray has excellent deleted scenes like the ones below.
These deleted scenes offer up a good mix of the film’s sense of humor. In one scene, where Connor (Andy Samberg) has just fed his friends a breakfast of dog crap to test their honesty, it goes from absurd to wonderfully bizarre as Connor and his friend Owen (Jorma Taccone) shout what are supposed to be insults at one another like “You go to the movies and eat soup!” and “You ride a horse!” It’s all in the delivery, and it works perfectly.
We also have a deleted scene highlighting Connor’s relationship with his publicist Paula (Sarah Silverman), which just allows Silverman to riff some insults, which is a good scene, but I can understand why it was left on the cutting room floor (as opposed to the insult scene, which should have made the final cut).
Finally, there’s a scene where Connor, Owen, and their manager Harry (Tim Meadows) try to figure out a hit song from an artist named Hammerleg, and it’s so clear that the scene is unscripted, yet it totally works (until they bust up laughing).
We also have a bit of the gag reel, specifically a bit where co-star/co-director Akiva Schaffer can’t get through a line about killing frogs to get their jizz. Seriously, how did no one go see this movie? (Maybe I just answered my own question).
