‘The Revenant’ Cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki Is the Best Thing That’s Happened to Instagram

     October 26, 2015

The Revenant from Oscar-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu and Oscar-nominated actor Leonardo DiCaprio was already revving up to be one attractive film. If the trailers and posters depicting the gorgeously tragic landscapes didn’t sway public opinion, the involvement of Emmanuel Lubezki was all the proof we needed. The acclaimed cinematographer (Gravity, Birdman) has delivered even more examples of the stunning imagery to come with a series of photos posted to Instagram.

Indiewire aggregated these striking images, which includes a series Lubezki dubbed “Faces of R.” The snapshots, which zoom in close to the grim faces of The Revenant, reiterate what we’ve previewed in the trailers: tight, close-up shots will complement the story’s themes of survival, isolation, and the battle between man and nature. Lubezki has won back-to-back Oscars for Best Cinematography the past two years, and perhaps this will make for a third.

DiCaprio stars in The Revenant as 1800s American frontiersman Hugo Glass, who is left for dead in the wilderness. While the actor hasn’t yet received his own statuette from the Academy, his chances are looking good for another go. DiCaprio is joined by Tom Hardy, Dohmnall Gleeson, and Will Poulter.

Here’s the official synopsis for the film.

Inspired by true events, THE REVENANT is an immersive and visceral cinematic experience capturing one man’s epic adventure of survival and the extraordinary power of the human spirit. In an expedition of the uncharted American wilderness, legendary explorer Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) is brutally attacked by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team. In a quest to survive, Glass endures unimaginable grief as well as the betrayal of his confidant John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy). Guided by sheer will and the love of his family, Glass must navigate a vicious winter in a relentless pursuit to live and find redemption. THE REVENANT is directed and co-written by renowned filmmaker, Academy Award® winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu (Birdman, Babel).

The Revenant opens in theaters on December 25th before going wide on January 8th.
