Rhys Ifans and Lucy Punch Take Like SQUIRRELS TO THE NUTS; Drew Barrymore’s ANIMAL Sets Cast; Thomas Mann Joins Indie Comedy WELCOME TO ME

Here’s the latest casting news:

  • Rhys Ifans (The Amazing Spider-Man) and Lucy Punch (Ben and Kate) will join Peter Bogdanovich’s ensemble comedy Squirrels to the Nuts, along with Ahna O’Reilly (The Help) and Jake Hoffman (Click).
  • Eve (Barbershop), Amaury Nolasco (Prison Break), Parker Young (Enlisted), Joey Lauren Adams (Chasing Amy), Elizabeth Gillies (Victorious), Paul Iacono (The Hard Times of R.J. Berger), Thorsten Kaye (Smash) and Jeremy Sumpter (Friday Night Lights) join the Drew Barrymore-produced horror film, Animal.
  • Thomas Mann (Project X) will join Shira Piven’s Welcome to Me, starring Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids), Will Ferrell (Anchorman), Tim Robbins (The Shawshank Redemption) and Linda Cardellini (Freaks and Geeks).

THR reports okeke-palmern the casting additions to Squirrels to the Nuts, a story that centers on “a married Broadway director (Owen Wilson) who meets a call girl (Imogen Poots) and tries to convince her to change her life, causing a domino effect that complicates his life.”  Ifans plays a movie star in the production who becomes attracted to the director’s wife (Kathryn Hahn).  Punch stars as “an Eastern European escort while O’Reilly is a reformed escort.”  Hoffman makes a cameo as a member of the hotel staff where the director and his wife stay. Cybill ShepherdRichard Lewis, Austin Pendleton, and George Morfogen also star.

THR also reports on the ensemble cast of Animal, with Keke Palmer (Akeelah and the Bee) toplining.  The horror story centers on “a group of close-knit friends who find themselves stranded in unfamiliar territory, pursued by a blood-thirsty predator. Holed up in isolated cabin, tensions mount as secrets are revealed. As the body count rises, the group puts their differences aside and fights for survival.”  Animal will enjoy a limited theatrical release and will be available on-demand in 2014 before debuting on Chiller.

Finally, from The Wrap, we have word that Mann will join Welcome to Me, a film which sees Wiig star as “a woman suffering from a personality disorder who wins the lottery and decides to finance a cable access talk show in which she discusses her life.”  Mann plays an art student and fan of Wiig’s show who has a steamy encounter with her; he’ll film his scenes this month in Los Angeles. The film also stars Jennifer Jason Leigh.
