See Makeup Effects Legend Rick Baker’s Fantastic ‘Twilight Zone’-Inspired Halloween Makeup

     October 31, 2016

It was a sad day in film history when legendary makeup effects artist Rick Baker retired from filmmaking, citing studios’ interest in cheap and fast work over work that’s done right. Fortunately for us, retiring professionally isn’t the same as giving up his craft altogether, and the FX maestro still occasionally doles out new treats and inventions on social media. Especially around Halloween!

Last year, the artist behind An American Werewolf in London, Michael Jackson’s Thriller, and Men in Black, among many many others, transformed his family into various incarnations of the joker to pretty spectacular results, and this year he’s transformed the Baker Bunch into the malformed medical experts from the The Twilight Zone episode “Eye of the Beholder”. The 1960 episode of the classic series centered on a woman undergoing her 11th procedure in an attempt to conform to society’s standards of beauty, her doctors and nurses’ faces hidden in the shadows throughout. In a classic Twilight Zone twist, the episode reveals that the young woman is beautiful by our standards, but lives in a society dedicated to conformity where the norm is a pig-nosed, droopy-lipped visage.

This year, Baker not only served up some still pictures of his work, but a video short that homages the classic episode…with a new twist that allows Baker to show off his artistry even more. We may not get to see Baker lend his talents to feature films these days, but this is a pretty delightful substitute. Check it out below.

If you still have any doubts that Baker is a Halloween champion, check out the makeup he and his wife wore to a Halloween party this year and last year’s Joker menagerie below.
