Robert Pattinson Attached to Star in Werner Herzog’s QUEEN OF THE DESERT

     August 14, 2012

Just a few days ahead of the limited release of his new starring role in David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis, Robert Pattinson is reportedly joining Werner Herzog’s indie picture, Queen of the Desert.   The picture, which stars Naomi Watts, centers on Gertrude Bell (Watts), “who was alternately a traveler, writer, archaeologist, explorer, cartographer, and political attaché for the British Empire at the dawn of the twentieth century. While only a commoner herself, Bell was nonetheless a kingmaker, helping found the modern states of Iraq and Jordan and installing their first rulers, King Abdullah and King Faisal.”  Pattinson would play a young Lawrence of Arabia.  Hit the jump for more details on his character.

Variety reports robert-pattinson-queen-of-the-desertthat Pattinson has joined Queen of the Desert as T. E. Lawrence, a British Army officer who earned his moniker through his vivid writing.  Lawrence was renowned for his role as a liaison in the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Turkish rule in the mid 1910s.  He wrote of the events in a London chronicle piece titled “Seven Pillars of Wisdom.”  The retelling of his experiences in Arabia during World War I formed the basis of the character in David Lean’s 1962 epic, Lawrence of Arabia.  Bell and Lawrence remained in contact throughout the years and were responsible for setting up the Hashemite dynasties in Jordan and Iraq.

Besides a role in the Harry Potter film franchise and the starring role in The Twilight Saga, Pattinson has shied away from blockbusters, choosing instead to star in challenging indie flicks.  Cosmopolis is his latest and it looks like Queen of the Desert will continue that tradition.
