“Hail Satan!” NBC Orders ROSEMARY’S BABY Miniseries

     December 10, 2013

There’s a reflex cringe factor when a studio wants to bring a classic film to the small screen.  But as we’ve seen in the past, there’s the possibility for success.  Nothing can surpass the original, but Bates Motel (based on Psycho) and Hannibal (based on Red Dragon) have managed to find critical success.  NBC, which is in the horror business with Hannibal, Grimm, and Dracula, is now looking for a miniseries based on Rosemary’s Baby, which was previously adapted by Roman Polanski into the terrifying 1968 film of the same name.  The story focuses on a young couple who move into an apartment complex, and the wife, Rosemary, becomes paranoid when her pregnancy becomes a great concern among her elderly neighbors.

According to THR, Scott Abbott (Introducing Dorothy Dandridge) and James Wong (American Horror Story) will write the screenplay for the four-hour miniseries.  Production will begin in Paris in January.  Again, it’s probably best to readjust expectations since nothing will surpass Polanski’s movie, but Ira Levin’s 1967 novel has the potential for another interesting take.
