Ruth Negga (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) has landed the female lead in AMC’s drama pilot, Preacher. From Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the project is based on Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon‘s beloved ’90s comic about Jesse Custer, a Texas preacher who gains the ability to make anyone do anything he says when he merges with an escaped creature from heaven. Negga is the first actor cast in the pilot and will take the role of Tulip, Jesse’s ex-girlfriend who joins him (and an Irish Vampire named Cassidy) on a quest to literally find God. Deadline describes Tulip as:
a volatile, action-packed, sexified force of nature, a capable, unrepentant criminal with a love of fashion and ability to construct helicopter-downing bazookas out of coffee cans and corn shine who’s not afraid to steal, kill or corn cob-stab her way out of a bad situation.
Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg wrote the script and plan to direct the pilot, Breaking Bad writer Sam Catlin will be the showrunner. Rogen recently revealed some of their inspirations for the project on twitter, which will naturally reference a fistful of westerns including Unforgiven, 3:10 to Yuma, and yes, A Fistful of Dollars, as well as some more unexpected influences like I Saw the Devil, The Raid, Kill Bill, The Tree of Life, Badlands, Friday Night Lights, and Short Term 12.
The Preacher pilot is set to film over the summer for a series consideration in 2016. Here’s the official synopsis from AMC:
Based on Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s twisted ’90s comic book series, “Preacher” is about Jesse Custer, a conflicted Preacher in a small Texas town who merges with a creature that has escaped from heaven and develops the ability to make anyone do anything he says. Along with his ex-girlfriend, Tulip, and an Irish vampire named Cassidy, the three embark on a journey to literally find God.
