HBO isn’t the only channel that can sling out insane witch-based nonsense. WGN American just released a trailer for the impending second season of Salem, the 17th-century-set supernatural melodrama rooted in the Salem Witch Trials. Salem Season 2 is set to double-down on all the grim, bloody zaniness that typified the first, with Shane West’s John Alden continuing his not-so-righteous battle to destroy all the witches in Salem, alongside Cotton Mather (Seth Gabel). On the other side of the table, Mary Sibley (Janet Montgomery) releases a plague on the town, and prepares for the possibility of all-out war between the witches and the town folk.

The press release goes onto explain:

Mary must also contend with threats emerging from within her own coven, including her mysterious servant Tituba (Ashley Madekwe), whose allegiances are slippery and motives unclear; as well as the arrival of a new visitor who may pose a threat to her uncontested control over the town — Dr. Samuel Wainwright (Stuart Townsend), an educated man of science who seeks to  uncover  the secrets of Salem and the plague that claimed Isaac Walton (Iddo Goldberg, “Mob City”) as its first victim.  As rivals circle her throne, Mary’s most vital task is shoring up support from Anne Hale (Tamzin Merchant), whose newly discovered identity as a cradle witch can render her either a powerful ally or a deadly foe.

The series, which was WGN America’s first scripted original, was co-created by Adam Simon and Brannon Braga. Fans of B-level horror may remember Simon as the director of Brain Dead and Carnosaur, whereas Braga made his name as a producer on Star Trek: The Next Generation and 24; Braga also penned Star Trek: Generations and First Contact.

The second season of Salem will premiere on April 5th, 9 p.m.
