Scarlett Johansson Replaced Samathan Morton in Spike Jonze’s HER

     June 21, 2013

Apparently, this is the week where directors got into the editing room and realized one of their actresses wasn’t right for the picture.  We previously reported that Shailene Woodley had been cut from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (and possibly replaced by Sarah Gadon), and now we’ve learned that Scarlett Johansson stepped in to replace Samantha Morton in Spike Jonze‘s Her.  For those unfamiliar with the picture, it’s a sci-fi romance between a lonely writer and his new operating system.  According to Vulture, Morton was previously set to voice the OS.  We knew that Johansson was in the movie, but it turns out she was brought in not as another role, but to be the new voice of the computer.  For his part, Jonze says he only found out that they would need a different voice once he started editing even though Morton had actually been on set during filming.

Hit the jump for Jonze’s full statement.  The film also stars Joaquin Phoenix, Rooney Mara, and Amy Adams.  Jonze is expected to show clips from the film this weekend at the L.A. Film Festival during a Saturday Night panel celebrating the auteur’s past work.

Here’s the statement Jonze sent to Vulture:

I think, unfortunately, it’s pretty normal in terms of my not-quite-painless-for-everyone-involved ‘process’ of discovering what the movie is.

Samantha was with us on set and was amazing. It was only in post production, when we started editing, that we realized that what the character/movie needed was different from what Samantha and I had created together. So we recast and since then Scarlett has taken over that role.

I love Samantha. I’ve been friends with her forever and I hope we make lots of things together in the future.

Be well,
