Disney Legend Alan Menken Is Writing Songs for Seth Rogen’s ‘Sausage Party’

     November 11, 2015

The great Alan Menken has composed music for such renowned classics as Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, and Newsies. Now, he can add Sausage Party to that prestigious resume.

Seth Rogen teamed up with his longtime partner in crime, Evan Goldberg, to develop a raunchy, R-rated animated comedy about a sausage determined to discover the truth about his existence, and the result is the aforementioned Sausage Party. In addition to scripting duties, on which Kyle Hunter and Ariel Shaffir also worked, Rogen is lending his voice to a character named Frank. The funny man recently tweeted a behind-the-scenes photo from the recording booth of some sheet music, revealing Menken’s involvement. The song is called “The Great Beyond,” it begins with the words, “Dear Gods, you’re so divine,” and Menken is the name behind the music.

In truth, we found out about Menken’s involvement earlier this year, but seeing is believing. Check out the tweet below.

Thanks to Goldberg and producer James Weaver, who spoke to Collider last year, we know a little bit about what this song is about. As they explained, humans are considered “gods” who take food items out of the grocery store and into “The Great Beyond.” The film brings a Toy Story-like approach to food in a grocery store; they all come to life after the lights go out. One day, Frank and his buddies get chosen to go to The Great Beyond, but they fall on the floor, forcing them on a quest to get back to their aisles.

Funny enough, Sausage Party is a sausage fest. Among the voice talent for the film is Kristen Wiig, Salma Hayek, and Rogen’s boys Paul Rudd, James Franco, David Krumholtz, Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Craig Robinson, Nick Kroll, Bill Hader, and Edward Norton. Greg Tiernan and Conrad Vernon co-direct the film, which is set for release on August 12, 2016.
