Friday Box Office: ‘Shazam!’ Eyes Another Box Office Victory; ‘Hellboy’ and ‘Missing Link’ Sink

     April 13, 2019

Shazam! will remain king at the box office for at least another weekend. The film took in $6.6 million on its way to about $21 million in its second frame. So far, the Zachary Levi family comedy has earned $204 million worldwide.

As for the newcomers, Little is performing the best among the three. The Big-inspired comedy is on track to bring in $14 million after earning $5.1 million on Friday. That’s about in line with expectations for the film, which stars Regina Hall as a bullying exec who is transformed into her teenage body (played by Marsai Martin, who also came up with the idea for the movie and is Hollywood’s youngest executive producer). The film cost $20 million to produce, so between future weeks at the box office, some international and ancillary markets, Little should provide a nice little profit for Universal.

But it wasn’t all sunshine for the newcomers. Hellboy is coming in far below expectations. Expectations had the reboot coming in between $16-20 million, and instead it looks like the film will only gross $12 million on its opening weekend. In case you’re wondering, the 2004 Hellboy made $23 million on its opening weekend, and its sequel, Hellboy: The Golden Army, made $34 million on its opening weekend. Unless overseas markets deliver in a big way, the Hellboy reboot is DOA.

Meanwhile, LAIKA just can’t seem to figure out a way to connect with audiences. Their latest feature, Missing Link, skews much younger than their other movies and this time they were working with Annapurna as a distributor instead of Focus Features. The film was eyed to make between $8-12 million, but it looks like it will have to settle for $6 million. It’s possible that young audiences are just put off by anything stop-motion because it’s not what they’re used to, but that’s a shame. LAIKA makes good movies, and it’s a shame they always struggle to find an audience.

Finally, Aviron’s romantic drama After will also limp to around $6 million at 2,138 locations. Per Variety, “The film stars Josephine Langford as a college student who begins a relationship with the school’s resident bad boy, played by Hero Fiennes-Tiffin.” Shocking no one wanted to pay money to see a teen romantic drama in a theater when they can flip on The CW and see it for free.
