Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright Hope to Start on a New Script Soon

     June 9, 2011

It’s been four years since Hot Fuzz and geeks have been eagerly awaiting the next collaboration between Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright.  Way back in March 2009 Pegg said he was hoping to reteam with Wright in the fall to shoot the tentatively titled The World’s End, the third film in the “Blood and Ice Cream” trilogy.  At the time, Pegg said “If Shaun of the Dead was about leaving your 30s and taking responsibility and Hot Fuzz was about being a man, then the next one will be about being an old man.”  Of course, that was over two years ago and their next film could be completely different.

But rest assured, that collaboration is still coming and Pegg says he hopes can punch out a first draft with Wright before having to rejoin Starfleet and shoot Star Trek 2.  Hit the jump for Pegg’s full quote where he also explains that their next movie isn’t going to be the same as Shaun and Hot Fuzz.

Here’s what Pegg told AICN‘s Mr. Beaks:

I wouldn’t want to become predictable or be the guys who do that. The next thing that we do will hopefully be… you know, in writing our new thing, Edgar and me have been very determined – that we’re going to start in earnest very, very soon – to not just do the same thing again, to do something very different. Not to the point of alienating people who want something, but just give people something new and something different. You can’t just stay where you are forever. You have to mutate to survive, and I think we’re going to make sure that we do that. I’d hate to become stale and predictable. People are already making films that are kind of like the sort of thing we might do. I want to stay a little bit ahead of the curve at least.

Presumably, this means that their next film won’t be in the homage/reference-heavy vein of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.  I think their fans are willing to go for that.  Perhaps if Pegg and Wright had only done Shaun and Hot Fuzz at this point, the majority fans might only be willing to accept the same kind of film (change: bad!) but because they’ve seen Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and watched Pegg in a variety of roles, I think they’ll take a chance on something new.

So how soon is “very, very soon”?  Pegg tells AICN:

We already started the conception process, so it’s just a question of when we can get together. I’m just about to start shooting a movie here in the UK, so maybe between that and STAR TREK we might get a chance to bang out a first draft if we’re lucky.

Let’s all hope they’re lucky.

Pegg recently co-starred in Greg Mottola’s Paul.  He’ll be seen this December in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and in mo-cap form as one of the Thompson Twins in Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn.
