CITADEL Director Ciaran Foy to Helm SINISTER 2

     April 17, 2014

A director has been chosen for the horror sequel Sinister 2Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose) co-wrote and directed the first film, which revolved around a true crime writer (Ethan Hawke) who moves his family into the home where a family was previously murdered, only to stumble across Super 8 footage depicting the murders of said family and numerous others.  Though Derrickson returned to co-write the sequel with Sinister co-writer C. Robert Cargill, he opted to step back and let another filmmaker take the helm, and he announced on Twitter this evening that Citadel director Ciaran Foy will be taking the reigns of Sinister 2.  Hit the jump for more.

sinister-2-sequelThough Derrickson will not be directing Sinister 2, he added that he will remain onboard as a producer of the sequel alongside Jason Blum, who also produced the first film through his lucrative low-budget-high-profit model via Blumhouse Productions (the studio behind Paranormal ActivityThe Purge, etc.).

Foy made his feature directorial debut with the 2012 Irish horror film Citadel, so Sinister 2 marks his most high profile feature to date.  I’m not a massive horror fan but I found the first Sinister to be a really solid, genuinely terrifying entry to the genre; I legitimately had nightmares after an evening viewing.  The villain mythology and creation, in particular, was impressive, so I’m definitely interested to see how the franchise develops going forward.

As for Derrickson, his next directorial effort Deliver Us from Evil arrives in theaters this July, and he recently popped up on the rumored shortlist of filmmakers Marvel is supposedly considering to helm a Doctor Strange feature.  Additionally, he’s attached to an adaptation of the Stephen King story The Breathing Method, also at Blumhouse.

Watch a trailer for Foy’s Citadel below, and sound off in the comments with your thoughts on the prospect of the Sinister sequel.
