SOUTHPAW’s Second Trailer Featuring Jake Gyllenhaal in a Leaner and Meaner Cut

The first trailer for Antoine Fuqua’s Southpaw certainly made the film seem worthy of entering the halls of great boxing dramas, even if the extended look felt like it was giving away 80% of the movie. A new trailer is a trimmed-down, sixty-second version that hits the major beats while punching up the intensity of Jake Gyllenhaal’s performance as boxer Billy Hope. The tone of this cut is also not quite as heavy handed with screenwriter Kurt Sutter’s doom and gloom, opting instead for quick jumps from one emotional gut-shot to the next as Billy tries to climb the ranks toward self-respect, redemption in the eyes of his daughter, and a shot at the title.
