First SOUTHPAW Trailer Has Jake Gyllenhaal Fighting to Get His Daughter Back

     March 27, 2015

southpaw-jake-gyllenhaal-sliceThe first Southpaw trailer has gone online, and it basically takes you through the entire film even going so far as to show the death of a major character (granted, it’s an inciting event, but they could probably cut around it). The movie stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a boxer who must fight his way back to the top after he loses custody of his daughter due to personal tragedies and mistakes.

Setting aside that the trailer shows too much, it still looks like a good movie, and following End of Watch, Prisoners, Enemy, and Nightcrawler, Gyllenhaal is clearly at the top of his game right now. I’m still wary of director Antonie Fuqua’s work, but perhaps he’s found a good partner in screenwriter Kurt Sutter (Sons of Anarchy). Solid boxing dramas are hard to come by, but hopefully Southpaw will be one of them.

Check out the Southpaw trailer below. The film opens July 31st, and also stars Forest Whitaker, 50 Cent, and Rachel McAdams.

Here’s the official synopsis for Southpaw:

From director Antoine Fuqua (TRAINING DAY) and writers Kurt Sutter (SONS OF ANARCHY) and Richard Wenk (THE MECHANIC) comes SOUTHPAW – the story of Billy “The Great” Hope, Junior Middleweight Boxing Champion of the World. When tragedy strikes and he loses it all, Billy enters the battle of his life as he struggles to become a contender once again and win back those he loves. SOUTHPAW stars Academy Award® nominee Jake Gyllenhaal, Academy Award® winner Forest Whitaker, Rachel McAdams, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Rita Ora, Naomie Harris and Victor Ortiz.  In theaters July 2015.
