SPECTRE: Christoph Waltz Reiterates That He’s not Playing Blofeld

     April 7, 2015

Last November, Christoph Waltz was rumored to play the villain in the new James Bond film, and that villain could be 007’s old nemesis, Blofeld. Blofeld, for those who don’t know, is the head of the evil organization SPECTRE, which is also the title of the latest Bond pic. So Waltz, who relishes villainous roles, must be playing Ernest Stavro Blofeld.

Except when the cast was announced for Spectre, Waltz wasn’t playing Blofeld. He was playing a new character named “Franz Oberhauser”. Clearly, the name was some kind of ruse and that “Oberhauser” is a cover. But Waltz continues to stress that he’s not Blofeld.

When we spoke to him December while he was doing press for Big Eyes and asked if he was playing Blofeld, he replied, ““No.  No.  It’s more interesting than that.”

Waltz has now been asked again, this time by British GQ. His response:

“That is absolutely untrue. That rumour started on the Internet, and the Internet is a pest. The name of my character is Franz Oberhauser.”

First, I wholeheartedly agree that the Internet is a pest. Occasionally it’s a useful pest, but a pest all the same.

Second, I believe that he’s not Blofeld. I also believe that Blofeld is in the movie, and that’s why Waltz is a brilliant little bit of casting. Fans are thinking that this is like Star Trek Into Darkness desperately trying to cover up the presence of Khan, but I think it’s playing more into the belief that if we think Blofeld is in the film and we see Christoph Waltz, then Waltz must be Blofeld. He’s too good at being bad.

But this is a big cast filled with lots of new characters, and I think another one of them is Blofeld. That’s just my theory, but you don’t put in SPECTRE without its head, or at the very least, you allude to him. It might be a Sherlock Holmes situation where the signature villain won’t appear until the next film. Whatever the case may be, people should realize that while Waltz may be playing a bad guy, but that bad guy isn’t Blofeld.
