Michael Giacchino Confirms He’s Scoring ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’

     November 6, 2016

Michael Giacchino has got a taste for superhero movies, and that is some fantastic news for anyone that’s a fan of the genre. The Oscar-winning composer made his superhero score debut with Doctor Strange, and in the process, he delivered the most unique, spirited, and best Marvel score to date. Now, he’s confirmed that he’ll be returning to the Marvel fold for Spider-Man: Homecoming, so right abut now would be a good time to get excited.

Giacchino confirmed the gig on twitter with a casual “The rumors are true..” and a Spider-Man: Homecoming logo. It’s certainly a move that makes sense. Giacchino is a consistent Disney collaborator, having scored multiple Disney films over the years, and as I mentioned, he just delivered their most engaging and memorable Marvel score to date. The perils of the Marvel score were well-documented in a popular video essay over the summer, and if Disney is looking to start turning out superhero scores on the level of their Star Wars and animation banners, Giacchino is just the right guy to do it.

While he’s composed everything from Lost to Star Trek to Let Me In, the bulk of Giacchino’s most beloved work has come out of his collaboration with Pixar.  He scored The IncrediblesRatatouille, Up, Cars 2, and Inside Out. , and took home an Academy Award for his stunning work on Up. He also scored this year’s Disney Animation breakout Zootopia, and has previously worked with the live-action division on Sky High, John Carter, and Tomorrowland. Next, he’s set to score Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (which he took over for Alexander Desplat after the reshoot schedule forced him off the project), which means Giacchino will have officially put his stamp on all four of Disney’s film divisions.

I’m thrilled by the news and as great as the Doctor Strange score was, I think Spider-Man is going to be an even better fit for his sensibilities. I’m equally excited to hear Peter Parker’s adolescent world and Spider-Man’s web-slinging aerial battles through the musical stylings of Michael Giacchino. Directed by Jon Watts, Spider-Man: Homecoming is set to swing into theaters on July 7, 2017.
