‘Spider-Man’ and ‘Jumanji’ Get New Release Dates

     January 20, 2016

Are you so excited to see the new Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland that you can’t stand it? Well, you’ll be happy to know that the standalone film is getting an earlier release date. It’s only a couple weeks earlier, but it’s still something.

According to Variety, Sony, which is co-producing Spider-Man with Marvel Studios, has given the release date a small bump up from July 28, 2017, to July 7, 2017. The film stars Holland as our new Peter Parker, who will make his first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in this year’s Captain America: Civil War. Holland will be joined by Marisa Tomei, who’ll play his Aunt May, while Jon Watts (Cop Car) directs from a screenplay by John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein.

When Spider-Man was first announced by Marvel and Sony, the other Phase Three slate was shifted around in order to accommodate the addition. Thor: Ragnarok with Chris Hemsworth and director Taika Waititi went from July 28 to November 3 of that year, which then moved Black Panther with Chadwick Boseman and the newly announced director Ryan Coogler to November 2, 2018, which pushed Inhumans into 2019 on July 12.

This latest shift for Spider-Man was accompanied by a new release date announcement for the Jumanji remake. The film, about a mystical board game that brings all manner of jungle inhabitants and disasters to life, has been pushed from its Christmas 2016 release to the July 28, 2017 spot. Jake Kasdan (Sex Tape) recently signed on to direct the film.

This is making 2017 a pretty packed year. It’s already the year when Disney will start releasing three Marvel movies annually, and Warner Bros. will debuts Wonder Woman followed a few months later by Justice League: Part One. On the Fox side of superhero films is the third and last Wolverine movie for Hugh Jackman. With the studio recently dropping Fantastic Four 2 from its release roster, that leaves room for, perhaps, that New Mutants movie we’ve been hearing about or something else they have brewing.
