Universal has released a new trailer for Split, the latest film from writer/director M. Night Shyamalan that stars James McAvoy in a truly transformative role. He plays Kevin, a man afflicted with 23 separate personalities who exist within his mind. His psychiatrist believes that one more entity lies buried beneath the others but is poised to emerge and subjugate the rest to its will. And when that happens, it’s hard telling just what Kevin will be capable of.
Bordering on giving too much of the story away, this trailer is a fantastic first watch for anyone coming into a Shyamalan picture cold. And it’s probably where you want to stop looking into Split and just lay low until the film’s debut early next year. If you really need to know more before it opens, you can check out our own Haleigh Foutch‘s review of the film here.
Also starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Haley Lu Richardson, Betty Buckley, Kim Director, Brad William Henke, and Jessica Sula, Split opens on January 20th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Split:
While the mental divisions of those with dissociative identity disorder have long fascinated and eluded science, it is believed that some can also manifest unique physical attributes for each personality, a cognitive and physiological prism within a single being.
Though Kevin (James McAvoy) has evidenced 23 personalities to his trusted psychiatrist, Dr. Fletcher (Betty Buckley), there remains one still submerged who is set to materialize and dominate all the others. Compelled to abduct three teenage girls led by the willful, observant Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy, The Witch), Kevin reaches a war for survival among all of those contained within him—as well as everyone around him—as the walls between his compartments shatter apart.
