Marvel Developing ‘New Warriors’ TV Series Featuring Squirrel Girl

     August 30, 2016

Marvel and ABC Studios are still hammering away at TV. While Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is somehow still on the air, Agent Carter was canceled and Marvel’s Most Wanted didn’t get picked up. But now the two studios are changing things up a bit by pursuing a half-hour comedy series entitled New Warriors. What’s more, this new series would feature fan-favorite character Squirrel Girl (aka Doreen Green), a superhero who has the power to talk to squirrels along with possessing super speed and strength.

According to TV Line, Marvel and ABC studios are shopping the project to cable and streaming outlets, and it will be interesting to see who bites. Netflix seems pretty comfortable with their gritty Marvel series, and I’m a little surprised that ABC proper doesn’t want to take a chance on a new comedy on either its broadcast network or on its cable channel Freeform. That makes Amazon or Hulu the most likely candidates for a new Marvel series since I can’t imagine the show going to an ABC competitor in the broadcast or cable arena.

For those who are unfamiliar with New Warriors, it’s a group of super-powered teenagers who are described as a “junior version of The Avengers”. However, that’s not to be confused with the team, Young Avengers (it does get a bit confusing, doesn’t it?).

It will be interesting to see if this show comes to fruition. Marvel Studios and Marvel TV are basically separate entities at this point. They can make reference to each other (although the movies never reference the TV shows), but there’s very little sharing going on between the two. Some may see that as a hindrance to a big, crossover universe, but a show like New Warriors could use that to its advantage to just have fun with what the Marvel universe is offering rather than trying to play by the rules of the movies or its fellow TV shows. After all, when one of your main characters is named “Squirrel Girl”, you should be able to cut loose a bit.
