‘Star Trek Beyond’ Set Video Provides a First Look at New Costumes and Alien

     August 20, 2015

A new Star Trek Beyond set video has emerged, and it provides us a glimpse of new costumes for Starfleet as well as a first look at an unnamed, lead alien character played by Sofia Boutella (she’s a bit unrecognizable in this footage, but you’ll mostly likely know her as the blade-footed baddie from Kingsman: The Secret Service).

In this set video, we can see Kirk (Chris Pine) and Chekov (Anton Yelchin) decked out in new uniforms, which got a close-up a couple months ago when director Justin Lin confirmed the title of the upcoming film. The full costume looks officious, but paired with a phaser holster, pads, and boots, it also looks suited for an away mission. However, Scotty (Simon Pegg) is still in his Engineering Reds, so I’m curious to see how this scene comes together. Usually when a Starfleet away team ventures out, they’re dressed in the same style, whether it be similar Starfleet uniforms or clothing that’s indigenous to the planet in order to blend in and not break the Prime Directive (although Into Darkness showed that the Prime Directive is kind of an afterthought for this crew).

As for Boutella’s character, BMD points out via Trek expert Jordan Hoffman that the alien design is reminiscent of the inhabitants on Nibiru from the opening of Into Darkness, although BMD hears that this movie will include only new alien races.

Check out the Star Trek Beyond set video below. The film opens July 8, 2016 also stars Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Karl Urban, Joe Taslim, Lydia Wilson, Deep Roy, and Idris Elba.
