It’s not the best time to be a Star Trek fan right now even though the franchise is active right now. The third movie arrives next year, and it will return to TV via CBS’ streaming subscription service in 2017. However, it remains to be seen if these upcoming installments will carry the heart of Star Trek, or if they’ll carry on as Star Wars imitation, or, as I suspect will be the case with at least Star Trek Beyond, aping Guardians of the Galaxy.
But perhaps I’m wrong and Beyond screenwriters Simon Pegg and Doug Jung along with director Justin Lin have gotten Trek back on track. We might get our first glance at what they’re going for as early as next week when Paramount attaches the first Star Trek Beyond trailer to Star Wars: The Force Awakens. We don’t know how much, if any, footage will be shown from the new Trek film, but it will at least serve as an announcement trailer.
It makes sense that J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot, which continues to produce Star Trek, would be able to get a trailer attached to The Force Awakens. THR reports that other trailers likely to play in front of Star Wars include Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, The Huntsman’s Winter War, X-Men: Apocalypse, Independence Day: Resurgence, The Jungle Book, Captain America: Civil War, and Finding Dory. It’s also likely we’ll see the Star Trek 3 trailer pop up online before we see it with Force Awakens since it’s rare for trailers to play with movies first before being released on the Internet.
Star Trek Beyond opens July 22, 2016, and stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, Joe Taslim, Sofia Boutella, and Idris Elba.
