Watch: Mark Hamill Talks Evil Luke Skywalker With J.J. Abrams In 2005

     October 21, 2015

The final trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens debuted during Monday Night Football this week, and we still don’t have an official look at Mark Hamill reprising his role of Luke Skywalker. There’s probably a reason for that, but the biggest fan theory buzzing around the webosphere postulates that it’s because the good, wholesome Jedi Knight has turned to the Dark Side in his old age. Adding even more fuel to the fire is an old installment of Dinner for Five, an IFC series from the ‘00s, that’s making the rounds.

In 2005, Hamill appeared on an episode that featured Kevin Smith, Jason Lee, Stan Lee, and future Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams. During the show, Hamill addressed the filmmaker, recalling how he pitched the idea of an evil Skywalker to George Lucas.

“As an actor that would be more fun to play. I just thought that’s the way it was going from when we finished [Empire Strikes Back] … I’ll have to come back, but it will be I have Han Solo in my crosshairs, and I’ll be about to kill him or about to kill the Princess or about to kill somebody that we care about. It’s an old cornball movie, like World War II movies.”

While this could totally be a coincidence, it falls in line with what some fans have been tweeting about — Skywalker is secretly evil and possibly mentoring Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren, and that’s why he hasn’t been revealed yet. While the evidence is circumstantial at best, this wouldn’t be the first time Skywalker became evil. The Dark Empire run from Dark Horse Comics saw Skywalker following in his father’s footsteps.

However, all we’ve seen from Hamill in The Force Awakens is through that cloaked figure kneeling next to R2-D2 that appears to be the actor. Other than that, we hear him in one of the earlier teaser trailers saying, “The Force is strong in my family. My father has it, I have it, my sister has it. You have that power, too,” which is a line of dialogue pulled from Return of the Jedi.

All will be revealed when Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theaters on December 18th. Watch the Dinner for Five episode with Hamill and Abrams below.
