Rumor: ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ Script Got A Hand From Christopher McQuarrie

     October 19, 2015

Back when Lucasfilm announced the first Star Wars anthology film, Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli, After Earth) was attached to the script. However, the writer said earlier this year that he was no longer on the project. Rumblings pointed to Simon Kinberg as his replacement, but by the time Disney CEO Bob Iger announced the name of the Gareth Edwards film, a press release named Oscar nominee Chris Weitz (About a Boy) as the writer. Now, a new rumor is making the rounds claiming that Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation director Christopher McQuarrie was also involved.

According to Latino Review, the Edge of Tomorrow screenwriter spent two weeks on the script for Star Wars: Rogue One. If true, it’s unclear when he was supposed to have made this pass, but it’s an enticing prospect, nonetheless.

It seems unlikely to have happened this year. Back in January, Paramount moved up the December release of M:I 5 to July, and reports surfaced the following month that production had been halted so McQuarrie could rework the ending. However, McQuarrie says they were merely prepping to film the ending, which he ended up shooting in March.

So far, we know that the story for Rogue One will take place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and focus on a team of resistance fighters as they work to steal plans for the Death Star. The Theory of Everything’s Felicity Jones leads a cast that includes Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk (using motion capture), and Riz Ahmed. Filming began on Rogue One this past August ahead of its theatrical release on December 16, 2016.

Though we should take the rumor of McQuarrie’s involvement with a grain of salt — at least for the time being — it does tickle me to no end to think that the man who wrote one of last year’s best sci-fi films could have something to do with the first standalone Star Wars adventure.
