Chris Weitz Is Writing Gareth Edwards’ STAR WARS Spinoff Movie

     January 26, 2015

After original writer Gary Whitta amicably departed the project after completing a draft, Godzilla director Gareth Edwards has found a new writer to complete the scripting duties on his Star Wars spinoff movie.  And it’s not Simon Kinberg, who was rumored for the gig a few weeks ago.  Chris Weitz, who has a ton of credits but is perhaps best know for writing and directing 2002’s critically acclaimed About a Boy (or New Moon if you’re a Twilight fan), will now be importing Whitta’s Fade In file into his screenwriting software of choice.

THR originally broke the news of Weitz’s hiring.  Weitz does have a lot of experience so this is probably a pretty solid pick.  We’re not exactly sure what this Star Wars spinoff is about, except that it takes place outside the events of the upcoming trilogy that gets kickstarted with this winter’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens. There is a rumor that says it will be a heist film that involves bounty hunters looking to steal the plans for the Death Star.  That would put this movie’s timeline somewhere before the events of A New Hope, which would be interesting (though I recommend they don’t try to sell it as a “prequel” if this is indeed the case).
