According to EW, Danish actress Linnea Berthelsen will play Roman, “an emotionally damaged, magnetic young woman who suffered a great loss as a child. Although she does not live in Hawkins, she is mysteriously connected to the supernatural events at the lab.” Sean Astin (The Lord of the Rings) will play Bob Newby, “a kindhearted former nerd who went to high school with Joyce (Winona Ryder) and Hopper (David Harbour) and now manages the local Hawkins RadioShack.” Finally, Paul Reiser (Aliens) will play Dr. Owens, “a high-ranking member within the Department of Energy on a ‘clean-up’ assignment, tasked with containing the events of last year.”

Nothing else official was revealed about these characters, but there are some clues as to what they might bring to the plot.

The fact that Roman is on a first-name basis may be significant, much like Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown). Might her “great loss as a child” have something to do with her connection to the lab? Eleven can’t be the only test subject who underwent their Coca-Cola can experimentations. Astin’s role may just be a fun nod to The Goonies, one of the films that served as inspiration for the Duffer Brothers in crafting Stranger Things. However, radios are useful instruments in communing with the Upside Down, as we know. Then there’s Dr. Owens. Might he have something to do with Hopper, who struck a deal with those Department of Energy agents and was seen entering a car after rescuing Will?

In addition to the return of Finn Wolfhard (Mike), Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin), Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas), Noah Schnapps (now a series regular as Will), Natalia Dyer (Nancy), Charlie Heaton (Jonathan), and Joe Keery (Steve), Sadie Sink will play the “tough and confident” tomboy Max, while Dacre Montgomery will play Billy, her “hyper-confident,” “violent and unpredictable” older step-brother.

Stranger Things season 2 will premiere on Netflix next year.
