Friday Box Office: Tom Hanks Lands ‘Sully’ in the Top Spot for Clint Eastwood’s Latest

     September 10, 2016

With six Oscars between them, director Clint Eastwood and actor Tom Hanks have another winner on their hand in Sully, at least as far as the opening box office frame is concerned. The duo, at 86 and 60 years of age respectively, show no signs of slowing down despite storied careers that have already given us some of the best characters, performances, and films in cinematic history. Sully may not be remembered in the top tier of either filmmaker’s filmography–our own Brian Formo said it fell short in his review–but it’s good enough for a top spot in Friday’s box office with $12.2 million, looking at a weekend tally around $34 million. If that estimate holds, Sully will be Hanks’ third-best live-action film opening ever.

Also in its debut weekend, the Screen Gems’ thriller When the Bough Breaks, directed by Jon Cassar and starring Morris Chestnut and Regina Hall, takes the second spot with $5.3 million. You can learn all you need to know about that film right here. The combined force of both new debuts were enough to knock Don’t Breathe from the top spot it had enjoyed for the last two weekends. The third debut in the Top 10 is Lionsgate’s animated Robin Crusoe film, The Wild Life, which pulled in only $700,000 heading for a $2.6 million weekend total. However, the film’s been playing all around the world since February and has tallied over $21.6 million globally.

Warner Bros.’ anti-hero film Suicide Squad continues to perform well, taking the fourth spot with $1.4 million, bringing its domestic total to $303.2 million. The film’s foreign box office has outpaced the domestic one, bringing the worldwide total to over $681 million. The film won’t pass Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in either the domestic or worldwide tallies, but the strong performance is good enough for second place in the DC Extended Universe.
