William Fichtner Talks TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES; Says “It’s Not Like Any TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES You’ve Seen Before”

     October 23, 2013

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans should probably start preparing for the upcoming live-action movie to be radically different from the property they know and love.  That doesn’t mean the movie will be bad, but it will likely be controversial among fans.  In a recent interview with the great William Fichtner, who will play the Turtles’ arch-nemesis Shredder, he says “It’s not like any Mutant Ninja Turtles thing you’ve ever seen before,” and that’s just the tip of the iceberg of what to expect when the film comes out next year.

Hit the jump for more about what Fichtner had to say, but be warned that some of his comments could be considered spoilers.  The film also stars Megan Fox, Danny Woodburn, Alan Ritchson, Pete Ploszek, Jeremy Howard, Noel Fisher, and Will ArnettTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opens August 8, 2014.

shredder-foot-clanSpeaking to Flicks and the City [via CS], Fichtner elaborated on what will be different about the reboot:

“It always had sort of a bouncy cartoon feel to me, which is great, that’s why it was appealing.  That’s not this movie….It’s not like any Mutant NInja Turtles thing you’ve ever seen before. It’s freaky, they’re cool, and they’re mutants and they look awesome. It’s tough and it’s going to be really, really great.”

I really hope one of the Turtles says in the grittiest voice possible: “Cowabunga”.

Fichtner, who has signed a three-picture deal, also went into some detail about Shredder:

“Well I play a guy named Eric Sachs and we find out that Eric Sachs is somebody else too. I can’t give away too much in the story but I can tell you that who Shredder is in the telling of this Turtles is unlike any telling of the story before. His connection and relationship to the turtles is a bit surprising and for an actor playing it, the backstory, which comes out in this film, is really intriguing…We made some changes while filming that I thought are just awesome.”

While it’s clear that fans should (for better or worse) expect the unexpected, Fichtner says Shredder will at least have his armor.

A lot of people have a franchise or property they loved as a kid, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was mine.  Never underestimate the power of a catchy theme song, a love of pizza, and a wisecracking six-foot tall turtle who uses sais as a weapon.  That being said, I’m not precious about the material, and I’m curious to see what director Jonathan Liebesman has created.
