Josh Brolin Hints at the Future of Thanos in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR; Says “It’s Thanos Against Everyone”

     December 7, 2014

I just got back from the Inherent Vice junket in Los Angeles.  That film is absolutely wonderful, and I look forward to sharing full coverage with you soon (including the full text from the interview I pulled the following quotes from).  Josh Brolin, who plays a cop stuck in the past in Inherent Vice, spoke with us at length about the part and, along the way, dropped a few details regarding the direction of Thanos in the Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers: Infinity War.

Hit the jump for Brolin’s comments on Thanos’ direction as a character, which ostensibly stretches up to the culmination of Avengers: Infinity War.  And be sure to tune back in later for our Inherent Vice coverage, which features Brolin as an entirely different kind of bruiser.  That film opens nationwide on January 9th.

thanos-Avengers-Infinity-War-imageTowards the end of an interview with myself and a few other journalists, Brolin commented on the difference between playing a mo-cap character like Thanos and the more tangible Bigfoot from Inherent Vice:

“It’s different man, it’s just different.  I don’t have a thing like, “I only do small art films” or “I only do this.”  I just read a story and go, “wow.  That’s cool.”  It’s not, “I want to get into this genre or that genre.”  So Thanos came along.. and I had a good friend Louis D’Esposito who used to be a first AD and is now the co-president of Marvel, and he and I used to train together.  We did Hollow Man together.  He called me up and started talking about this thing.  It was nice because I could intimately talk to him about it.  What I liked. What I didn’t like about the whole idea of it.  But I love the idea of Thanos.”

Brolin then opened up a bit on the character’s future and what it’s been like playing him so far on a technical level:

“Ultimately it’s Thanos against everyone.  So why wouldn’t you do that?  I was more nervous doing that than I think I’ve been in long time. I was in front of thirty-two little cameras and I had a face sprayed with iridescent paint.  It’s really exciting, the possibilities of what it could become.”
