Bill Hader Joins THE BFG; Vincent D’Onofrio May Villainize MAGNIFICENT SEVEN Remake

     March 27, 2015

With his first big leading man role poised to be unveiled in this summer’s Trainwreck, the very talented Bill Hader is now going to be in a Steven Spielberg film. Deadline reports that the SNL alum has joined the cast of The BFG, Spielberg’s adaptation of the Roald Dahl book of the same name. The story revolves around a young girl who befriends a giant, then leads him and the Queen of England on a quest to stop other mean giants from eating each other. Mark Rylance has already been set to star as the titular BFG, and newcomer Ruby Barnhill is playing the little girl. The report says Hader will be playing one of the giants.

While Spielberg’s next film, the Tom Hanks-fronted Cold War thriller Bridge of Spies, doesn’t open until this fall, he’s already started filming The BFG up in Vancouver. The guy works quick, and it sounds like he’ll be moving right along onto Ready Player One after he finishes The BFG and the Bridge of Spies press tour (and presumably awards campaign). The BFG is slated for release on July 1, 2016.

In other casting news, Variety reports that Vincent D’Onofrio is in talks to play the villain in Sony’s Magnificent Seven remake. Antoine Fuqua is directing the redo, which has already assembled a fantastic ensemble that includes Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, and Ethan Hawke. The film will maintain the Western-centric vibe of the 1960 film, which was itself an adaptation of the classic Seven Samurai.

D’Onofrio will next be seen as the villain Kingpin in Marvel’s Daredevil Netflix series, which premieres next month. He also serves an antagonistic role in this summer’s Jurassic World. Production on the Magnificent Seven remake is poised to begin within the next month.
