THE BLOB Remake Is Happening; EXPENDABLES 2 Helmer Simon West Will Direct

     January 22, 2015

I try to keep an open mind about remakes but it gets harder when one of the properties they’re tackling is one of your favorite movies.  And, in this case, it’s almost hypocritical of me since I think Chuck Russell‘s 1988 version of The Blob (itself a remake of the 1958 Steve McQueen film) is a perfect piece of entertainment.  So I’ll wish new director Simon West (Expendables 2, The Mechanic) the best of luck but he’s got a high bar to clear.

There’s no word on a screenwriter or cast yet, but Goldcrest is aiming to start shooting The Blob remake this summer.  Per Deadline, Richard Saperstein and Brian Witten will produce.

West says that his approach will be more modern:

“With modern CGI we can now fully realize the potential of The Blob. The world I create will be totally believable, immersive and emotionally satisfying. It’s a thrill to introduce an enduring icon to a wider audience and a whole new era of fans.”

I get that there’s no sense in doing things the way they did them back in 1988, but to me that homespun feel actually added to the vibe of the material.  I’m not sure I need a sleeker version of The Blob.  That being said, I hate it when people automatically dismiss remakes.  Good luck to everyone involved.
