Friday Box Office: ‘The Conjuring 2’ Tops This Weekend’s Trio of Newcomers

     June 11, 2016

James Wan’s scary sequel The Conjuring 2 has taken the top spot of Friday’s box office with an estimated $16.4 million, slightly exceeding ticket-sale expectations and putting the New Line Cinema/Warner Bros. picture in line for a $38 million weekend. That should keep the Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga-fronted thriller out in front over newcomers Warcraft and Now You See Me 2. The positive buzz from movie critics and fans certainly helps the frontrunner, which our own Perri Nemiroff called “an engrossing and chilling sequel worthy of continuing the series” in her review.

Duncan Jones’ Warcraft adaptation, however, is a different story. Negative reviews from critics is in conflict with excitement and anticipation from fans, especially those in China where the videogame movie has amassed $145 million in just four days for a total international sum of over $277 million. Warcraft doesn’t really seem to need the domestic box office, but having said that, it’s $10.7 million Friday tally puts it on track to exceed weekend estimates of $25 million by a couple million, aiming for a $27 million total. It seems like a film aimed more at delighting fans of the Blizzard Entertainment series than coddling general audiences. Our own Matt Goldberg’s review called it “a film that is loaded with problems [that he] couldn’t help but admire what it was trying to accomplish.”

As for Jon M. Chu’s magic-oriented movie Now You See Me 2, it’s right on track with estimates, bringing in $8.4 million on Friday for an estimated weekend total of $24 million. There’s less of a divide between critics and fans here, but Goldberg called it “short on magic” in his review. Outside of the top three, which are all new debuts, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sequel passes $50 million domestically in its second weekend, and Thea Sharrock’s romantic drama Me Before You, starring Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin, edges out Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse for the fifth spot. Closing out the Top 10, Disney and Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book has now crossed the $900 million mark globally.
