New Line Developing THE CONJURING Sequel and Possible Franchise

     July 16, 2013

Director James Wan’s upcoming horror film The Conjuring comes with some pretty high expectations when it opens in theaters this weekend.  Originally scheduled for release this past January, Warner Bros. moved the film to a prime summer release date after test screenings went through the roof.  Early reviews have been incredibly positive for the film, and now it appears that a sequel is already being developed ahead of what is expected to be a solid box office run.  The film is based on the true story of the husband and wife paranormal investigator duo of Ed and Lorraine Warren (played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga), and the idea now is to build a possible series of films around the team’s investigations.  Hit the jump for more.

News of The Conjuring sequel comes via Variety, which reports that New Line is currently exploring a potential franchise based on the Warrens’ numerous cases.  You’ve no doubt seen the duo’s work onscreen before, as their accounts were the basis for The Amityville Horror and The Haunting in Connecticut.  It’s unlikely that Wan would return to direct, since he is currently busy prepping his action debut with Fast & Furious 7 and has publicly stated his desire to “graduate” from the horror genre and try his hand at some different types of filmmaking.

Ultimately the fate of a potential Conjuring franchise will rest with the first film’s box office performance.  Buzz has been high and New Line is confident that word of mouth will carry the horror pic through a successful run amidst the blockbusters of summer, but we’ll find out soon enough.
