‘The Dark Crystal’ Sequel Revived as a Comic Series, ‘The Power of the Dark Crystal’

Around 2005, plans were announced to make a sequel to The Dark Crystal, Jim Henson’s 1982 film. Years went by and the project fell apart, but the sequel has finally found its footing in the form of a new comic book from BOOM! Studios.

Titled The Power of the Dark Crystal, the comic will consist of 12 issues, which Si Spurrier adapted from the un-produced screenplay by David Odell, Annette Odell, and Craig Pearce. Here’s the plot description from a press release:

The series is set decades after events of 1982’s The Dark Crystal, with Jen and Kira distracted by the pressures of ruling Thra and no longer in touch with the needs of the people — which provokes a Fireling called Thurma to set out to steal a shard of the Dark Crystal with which she intends to restore power to her realm. Unfortunately, that mission might also restore the Skeksis, as well…

This description is similar to the synopsis released back in 2010 when Daybreakers directors Peter and Michael Spierig were once attached to helm the cinematic adaptation: the treatment then focused on a timeline “hundreds of years” after The Dark Crystal and “a mysterious girl made of fire” who steals a shard from the crystal in the hopes of reigniting the dying sun.

The film was put on hiatus in 2012, though it technically remained in development in 2014. At one point, Shane Abess was attached to direct, but he told The Guardian in an interview last year, “When I quit The Dark Crystal it was because I’d fallen in love with Jim’s handwritten notes on what his sequel idea was. All I wanted to do, for the fans and for myself, was shoot his version of the film. But nobody gave a shit about what Jim Henson wanted.”

Lisa Henson, head of the Jim Henson Company, said in a statement on the new comic:

The creativity that went into writing and designing the feature film was such that we wanted our fans to be able to see and enjoy it now through this comic book series.
